268 work opportunities in 100 days

2:10pm Monday 6th February 2012

A CELEBRATION takes place on Friday of a scheme that saw 151 firms create 145 apprenticeships and 123 work experiences placements in Somerset.

The 100-day Get Somerset Working Campaign aimed to drive down unemployment, particularly among young people.

After its conclusion last month, the partners – Somerset County Council, colleges, training providers and Somerset Employment and Skills Board – are marking the success with a Somerset Chamber of Commerce event.

Cllr David Hall, the county’s cabinet member responsible for economic development, said: “This news is a great boost for the Somerset economy, and particularly for young people looking to start a career.

“It proves local businesses are still prepared to invest in their future workforce during tough economic times.

“Opportunities have been created in a variety of sectors including education, leisure and tourism, skilled trades and environmental services.”

Graham Knight from the Get Somerset Working partnership, said: “We set out to work with 100 Somerset employers that hadn’t employed an apprentice or offered work experience in the past 18 months.

“In just 100 days, 151 employers pledged their support and created more than 260 opportunities, which is a truly fantastic effort.

“Research by the National Apprenticeship Service shows 83% of employers that employ apprentices rely on them to provide their future workforce, and for apprentices it’s a great way to develop new skills and gain qualifications.”

Friday’s event starts at 12noon at Taunton’s County Ground, when firms can get tips and advice on recruiting people with the rights skills, an insight into taking on apprentices and funding.
